Playing\nduring the interval, which lasts just 13 minutes, provides a platform with\nalmost unparalleled viewing figures. But some big names have actually rejected\nthe chance to perform at the global sporting event before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So which stars have turned down the Super Bowl halftime show? And why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\nalmost that time of year again, when sport, snacks and entertainment meet in an\nextraordinary American football extravaganza. So amid the excitement, let\u2019s\ntake a look at who has shunned it \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest names to ever say no, music megastar Rihanna reportedly rebuffed the Super Bowl\u2019s advances to appear in the 2019 halftime show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her\nreason? The Super Bowl has been surrounded by controversy over the\nlong-standing dispute between the NFL and quarterback Colin Kaepernick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The friction surrounds his decision not to stand <\/a>for the national anthem before games and to instead take the knee in protest of, and reference to, police brutality against minorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking\nthe knee in sport to highlight racism has now become widespread at events\nacross the world and, as well as sparking protest movements, has attracted the\nire of political figures such as Donald Trump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nrepresentative of Rihanna even confirmed that her decision was based on her\ndisagreement with the NFL\u2019s stance on Kaepernick, who has remained a free agent\nsince the off-season following his 2016 on-field protests, leading to\naccusations of him being frozen out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardi\nB<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

US\nrapper, Cardi B, is another performer believed to have passed over the chance\nto perform due to the serious situation with Kaepernick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having\ngone public with her support of the activist and athlete before, the musician\nhas also endured counter-rumors that she refused a Super Bowl show due to\ndemands surrounding a $1million fee and solo slot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However,\nthose claims were refuted by her representatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK songstress Adele is one of a few on this list to have seemingly turned down the Super Bowl for reasons that are musical, rather than political.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a US performance, the singer-songwriter felt compelled to publicly address rumors<\/a> she was set to perform in 2017, stating that it was because the show was \u201cnot about music\u201d and that she \u201ccan\u2019t dance\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For their part, the NFL went as far as to make an official statement that Adele hadn\u2019t been offered the coveted halftime slot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s\nthe truth? We may never know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one is a bit of both. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technically,\nthe artist known as Pink has performed at the Super Bowl before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back\nin 2018, the pop star sang the national anthem at the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But more recently, the singer said she would not want to be a halftime performer due to a combination of political beliefs and also how stars can be \u2018persecuted\u2019 for taking part. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turns out that rapper, producer and all-round general superstar Jay-Z didn\u2019t want the gig either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\nhas apparently previously turned down an offer, despite his wife Beyonce having\ntaken to the stage multiple times to headline and\/or play alongside the likes\nof Bruno Mars, Coldplay and the rest of Destiny\u2019s Child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But,\nin fact, Jay-Z was so turned off by the idea of performing on game day that he\ntook aim at the event, and how much he didn\u2019t want to appear at it, in one of\nhis tracks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\ncase you are in any doubt as to his feelings, Jay-Z raps in his song \u2018Apeshit\u2019:\n\u201cI said no to the Super Bowl\/ You need me, I don’t need you\/ Every night we in\nthe endzone\/ Tell the NFL we in stadiums too\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So,\nthere you go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eminem<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Everyone\u2019s favorite rap superstar from their school days, Eminem was apparently too expensive for the NFL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rumor\nhas it \u2014 and we stress rumor<\/em> \u2014 that the award-winning artist\u2019s demands\nwere too high to play in 2014, with Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers\neventually giving a memorable performance instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hey,\nwith hit songs, millions in album sales under his belt and the odd movie, maybe\nthe apparently very private Slim Shady just didn\u2019t need the hassle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outkast<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The band Outkast are also said to have dismissed the chance to sing at a Super Bowl. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nhip-hop duo is believed to have rejected NFL overtures way back in 2004, aka\nthe year of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake\u2019s infamous wardrobe\nmalfunction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe\nit\u2019s just as well\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their\nreason? The NFL was apparently set to offer Outkast limited time on stage,\nwhich it\u2019s suggested didn\u2019t go down too well with member Andre 3000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ok, Amy Schumer isn\u2019t a musician, and she didn\u2019t exactly turn down the opportunity to strut her stuff in the halftime showcase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the comedian did<\/em> let the world know that she wouldn\u2019t take part in Super Bowl commercials<\/a>, which is why she makes our list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nactress was aiming to make a statement about the NFL\u2019s stance on taking the\nknee, saying on Instagram that, \u201cHitting the NFL with the advertisers is the\nonly way to really hurt them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kanye\nWest<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Multi-million-selling rap artist and music producer, and once potential US presidential candidate<\/a>, Kanye West was also once a consideration for the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite\nbeing known just as much for his controversial statements as his songs, the NFL\nwere reportedly interested in putting the high-profile star on stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But,\nalas, it\u2019s said his financial demands were too much for even the Super Bowl to\nhandle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
