Comparing the commercial reality of men&#8217;s and women\u2019s club soccer, in particular, helps explain why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soccer is a traditionally male-dominated sport and the long-established history of the male game means fans, broadcasters, and sponsors are willing to pay much more money to access the product, and this is reflected in player salaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For context, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/womens-super-league-table\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women\u2019s Super League<\/a> has a current TV broadcast deal that is worth $9.8 million per year, whereas the Premier League\u2019s equivalent brings in a staggering $2.1 billion &#8211; more than 214x as much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Closing The Gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several steps are being taken particularly in the international game, to bring women\u2019s pay closer to men\u2019s. Many international soccer federations, including the US and England, now pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ussoccer.com\/equal-pay-faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">male and female teams the same salary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World-leading male leagues and clubs are also providing financial support to help grow the women\u2019s game. For example, the Premier League has agreed to an interest-free \u00a320m loan to the Women\u2019s Super League, but there is much more that can be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, the men\u2019s World Cup winners, France, received prize money of $38 million, but the women\u2019s winners earned just 7.5% of that ($4 million). The prize offered by FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, should be made equal for men and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International governing bodies should also try to address pay gaps between their men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams, following the lead of countries like England, the USA, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, businesses and broadcasters also have a major role to play in growing the women\u2019s game. The bigger the platform female soccer players get, the more their profiles will grow.
