When the puck doesn\u2019t drop their way, fans express their frustration through some poor behaviors like name-calling, drink tossing, or physical fights.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While each fan base has their own opinion on who the most \u2018ice cold\u2019 or aggressive NHL fans are, we blocked out the noise and went straight to the stats. Through a nationwide survey and weighted index score, we analyzed sportsmanship behaviors of 3,000 US and Canadian NHL fans. We measured everything from the frequency of booing, cheering for the opposing team\u2019s injuries, general lack of empathy, and more!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Findings:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Chicago Blackhawks have the #1 most \u2018ice cold\u2019 fans, scoring 96.9\/100&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Out of the Canadian NHL teams, the Montreal Canadiens fans are the most \u2018ice cold\u2019&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ottawa Senators fans are the \u2018warmest\u2019 or kindest in the league, with a low aggression score of 5.5\/100&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Central Division boast the most aggressive fans out of the 4 NHL divisions&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The West Conference has more aggressive fans compared to the Eastern Conference&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the puck!? These are the most &#8216;ice cold\u2019 NHL fan bases<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To determine the most &#8216;ice cold\u2019 fan bases, we surveyed 3,000 NHL fans on the following criteria into a weighted aggression index: frequency of booing, cheering for the opposing team\u2019s injuries, engaging in poor behaviors, trash-talking on the opposing team\u2019s social media platforms, unapologetic towards past poor behaviors, lack of empathy for the opposing team\u2019s losses, and self-reflection rating on their own fan base\u2019s sportsmanship quality.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_01_IG.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"5141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_01_IG.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_01_IG.png 2000w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_01_IG-1100x2828.png 1100w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_01_IG-480x1234.png 480w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_01_IG-840x2159.png 840w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_01_IG-420x1080.png 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chicago Blackhawks? More like Chicag-<em>oh-no, <\/em>it\u2019s the Blackhawks fans. They\u2019re ranked the <strong>#1 most \u2018ice cold\u2019 in the entire league, with a frosty score of 96.9\/100<\/strong>. To drop the puck, 22.2% confessed to dropping the gloves with the opposing fan base \u2013 the <strong>highest percentage in the NHL<\/strong>! Another 62.7% reveal they show no empathy for the other team\u2019s loss, plus an additional 46% feel no regrets about their past unsportsmanlike behavior. You\u2019re definitely skating on thin ice when it comes to Blackhawks fans.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tumbling down the rink with their chilling behaviors are the <strong>Colorado Avalanche fans, ranking #2 overall with a score of 94<\/strong>. Among the 45.5% who actively engage in mischievous actions, over half (57.6%) feel no remorse for their not-so-kind attitudes. Additionally, another 45.5% admit to not emphasizing with the opposing team\u2019s losses. About 1 in 4 (27%) fans admit to cheering when the rival player gets injured, while 72.5% enjoy booing the other team and their fans. The Colorado Avalanche truly put the \u2018ice cold\u2019 in avalanche!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> New York Rangers fan base<\/strong> skates into <strong>#3 place<\/strong> on the \u2018ice cold\u2019 rankings, with a <strong>total score of 82.8<\/strong>. They earned themselves the title of the <strong>most aggressive fan base in the Eastern Conference and the Metropolitan Division<\/strong>. About 11% of Rangers fans admit to getting into physical altercations with the rival teams\u2019 fans, while 44% regularly misbehave at games. Show good sportsmanship? <em>Fuhgeddaboutdit!<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Carolina Hurricanes<\/strong> rank <strong>#4<\/strong> out of 32, with 78.6 points. Hurricanes fans are the <strong>second most aggressive fan base<\/strong> in the <strong>Eastern Conference<\/strong> and the <strong>Metropolitan Division<\/strong>. The <strong>Boston Bruins<\/strong> finish at <strong>#5<\/strong> with an overall score of 73.7, making them the #<strong>1 most aggressive fan base<\/strong> within the <strong>Atlantic Division<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The heart of hockey: NHL\u2019s kindest fan bases<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Embodying the true Canadian spirit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/canada\/ontario\/\">Ontario<\/a>&#8216;s own <strong>Ottawa Senators fans<\/strong> can proudly claim the title of the <strong>NHL\u2019s kindest fan base<\/strong>. Scoring only <strong>5.5 points<\/strong> on the aggression scale, you\u2019re more likely to share a friendly pint than a punch with these guys. About 81.2% avoid any penalty-box behavior and a whopping 93.7% don\u2019t indulge in trash-talking on social media \u2013 the highest percentage in the league! When asked to rate their own fan base\u2019s sportsmanship levels, they scored an impressive 3.8 out of 5. Not bad, eh?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One New York team that hasn\u2019t <em>fugeddabout <\/em>their manners at the rink are the <strong>New York Islanders, the #2 kindest fans overall<\/strong> (<strong>8.3<\/strong>\/100). Unlike their rowdy neighbors, only 20% partake in any funny business \u2013 a 56% drop from the Rangers. Impressively, 80% admit to regretting past bad behaviors towards other fans, and thankfully, no one\u2019s dropped the gloves yet.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Washington Capitals\u2019 fan base slides in as the #3 kindest<\/strong>, clocking in <strong>10.6 points<\/strong> on the scoreboard. With 80.6% staying cool and classy on social media and 87% steering clear of any misconduct, their rank doesn\u2019t come out of left field.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Down in the entertainment capital, the <strong>Vegas Golden Knights\u2019 fan base<\/strong> shines as the <strong>#4 kindest<\/strong>, with <strong>15 points<\/strong>. Knights\u2019 fans can also claim the title as the <strong>#1 kindest<\/strong> among the <strong>West Conference<\/strong> and the <strong>Pacific Division<\/strong>. As for the <strong>#5 kindest<\/strong>, the honor goes to the <strong>Detroit Red Wings<\/strong>, flying high with a low aggression score of <strong>18.2<\/strong> points.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The most cold-blooded NHL Conferences and Divisions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_02_IG.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"4049\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_02_IG.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_02_IG.png 2000w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_02_IG-1100x2227.png 1100w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_02_IG-480x972.png 480w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_02_IG-840x1701.png 840w, https:\/\/www.casino.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/US_Ice_cold_NHL_Fans_02_IG-420x850.png 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWest Coast is the best coast\u201d in \u2018ice cold\u2019 attitudes, that\u2019s for sure! The <strong>West Conference has more aggressive hockey fans<\/strong> than the East Coast. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of the 4 divisions, the <strong>Central Division boasts the most &#8216;ice cold&#8217; fans overall (30.8%)<\/strong>. The Metropolitan Division follows closely behind (26.7%), with the Atlantic Division in #3 place (21.4%). The <strong>Pacific Division has the kindest fans<\/strong>, out of all 4 divisions, with only 20.7% aggressive fans. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Decoding NHL fan culture: Behaviors, attitudes, and loyalty&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent), the <strong>average<\/strong> NHL fan rates their fan base\u2019s <strong>sportsmanship levels at 3.6<\/strong>, just a notch about decent. This, of course, might vary depending on their team\u2019s performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re more likely to be hearing a chorus of \u2018woo\u2019 than \u2018boo\u2019 at the rink, as the average fan registers a <strong>2.7 average booing frequency<\/strong> on a scale of 1 (never) to 5 (always). Keeping the positive vibes going, only <strong>19.2%<\/strong> actually go out of their way to <strong>trash-talk their rivalries on social media<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flip side, while most hockey fans cringe at the sight of the other team\u2019s athletes getting injured, <strong>13.6% revel in it<\/strong>. Adding to the wound, <strong>83.6% admit they don\u2019t feel any remorse<\/strong> for their past poor interactions with other fans. However, to keep the hockey spirit positive, <strong>42% do empathize with other teams\u2019 losses<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In comes the fouls in the rink, out comes the foul language in the seats! <strong>Trash-talking seems to be the #1 go-to<\/strong> unsportsmanlike behavior for <strong>86.8%<\/strong>, when things don\u2019t go their way. <strong>Taunting<\/strong> comes in as the next, where <strong>59.3%<\/strong> of fans try to provoke others for a reaction. Only a mere <strong>3.6%<\/strong> get sloppy by <strong>tossing food or drinks<\/strong> in frustration or drop the gloves for a <strong>physical altercation (2.7%)<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly enough, <strong>48%<\/strong> of fans reveal they\u2019ll <strong>stand by their team if they engage in poor misconduct or scandals<\/strong>. Only 37.5% feel indifferent to the situation, while 14.5% would cut their loyalty ties. Like team, like fans?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All things considered, despite the variety of attitudes seen across the NHL league, it\u2019s evident that fans\u2019 reactions stem from their intense passion and love for both the sport and their team. May be best team win the Stanley Cup!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Methodology<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2024, we conducted a nationwide study of 3,000 US and Canadian NHL fans, asking about their sportsmanship behaviors.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, we created a weighted index to analyze and weight a multitude of aggression-like factors to determine the \u2018ice cold\u2019 and kindest NHL fan bases:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Participated in physical fights \u2013 25%&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Cheers for injuries \u2013 15%&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Engages in poor behaviors (trash-talking, taunting, etc.) \u2013 15%&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Doesn\u2019t regret poor behaviors \u2013 15%&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Lacks empathy for the opposing team\u2019s loss \u2013 15%&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>High booing frequency \u2013 5%&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>Trash-talks on the opposing team\u2019s social media accounts \u2013 5%&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>Self-rated sportsmanship ranking \u2013 5%&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The average age of respondents was 40.5 years old.
