Not all LDP members agree that casinos are a sound way to bring in foreigners. Hayashi is being challenged by another LDP member — former Diet Rep. Hachiro Okonogi. The ex-National Public Safety Commission chair and head of the Diet’s Casino Regulatory Commission shocked the country when he resigned from the legislature in June to challenge Hayashi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“I’m running \u2026 in order to stop the casino effort,” Okonogi affirmed in June. “Many people oppose the plan, and the environment in Yokohama is not right for it now.”<\/p>\n
The mayoral election is crowded, Hayashi and Okonogi being two of nine aspirants who have officially declared their candidacy. The election is set for August 22.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIR Has Fujiki’s Full Attention<\/b><\/h2>\n
Fujiki announced his retirement in June from serving as chairman and managing director of his family’s Fujiki Transportation and Stevedoring business organization. He remains, however, chairman of the Yokohama Port Harbor Resort Association.<\/p>\n
Fujiki said his retirement decision was to concentrate more of his energy on opposing the casino effort in Yokohama. Fujiki is supporting Okonogi for the mayoral election.<\/p>\n
“Hachiro will win the election.
